At 12:51pm on Tuesday, 22 February 2011 a devastating 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck Christchurch. The epicentre was only 5km deep and within 10km of the the city centre. Peak Ground Acceleration was recorded at 2.2g, one of the highest ever recorded. This follows an earlier 7.1 shake on 4 September  2010.
